Imaging Area
Spatial parameter defines the specific extent of the observable world that is captured by an optical sensor at any given moment. The field of view determines the total area of the circuit board that an inspection camera can analyze in a single frame. This dimension is a product of the focal length of the lens and the physical size of the imaging sensor.
Throughput Capacity
Production speed in an SMT line correlates with how many captures are required to cover the entire surface of the assembly. A larger area per image reduces the number of mechanical movements the camera gantry must perform, which lowers the total cycle time. However, increasing this area while using the same sensor resolution results in fewer pixels per millimeter of the board.
This trade off forces a choice between the speed of the inspection process and the ability to resolve the smallest features of the components. Engineers must balance these factors to ensure that the machine keeps up with the placement equipment without missing defects on fine pitch devices.
Resolution Constraint
Optical resolution remains fixed for a specific lens and sensor combination. Narrowing the window focuses the available pixels onto a smaller physical space to achieve higher precision.
